CC Mobile Arts is a robust interdisciplinary arts space created to showcase local Colorado Springs artists and performers. Our first step was to select artists whose work would create the ongoing narrative of the Arts Mobile and feature them on the exterior of the truck as part of a permanent moving gallery. Kevin Johnson's demonstrated commitment to showcasing Black protagonists moving through life and engaging viewers to engage their own imagination represent core pieces of the Mobile Arts' vision. First, we strive to create more opportunities to showcase Black joy and creativity and, second, to inspire viewers to reflect on their own creative and life journeys. Working with Kevin was a pleasure! He was very responsive, collaborative, and went above and beyond to ensure that his painting would transfer in all of its integrity to the side of a truck! We look forward to future collaborations!
Thank you!

When searching for an image to represent our virtual concert “Lift Every Voice”—a musical response to the protests during the summer of 2020—I came across Kevin Johnson’s stunning work, “True Colors.” It was as though this bold figure literally jumped off my screen, demanding my attention. The arresting colors and shapes, the beauty and vibrancy of the woman in Kevin’s painting, and the strength and intensity of her gaze drove me to contact the artist. Kevin kindly arranged for us to use a digital image of his painting to advertise our program, combined with this quote from Civil Rights leader Ella Baker: “We who believe in freedom cannot rest.”
Kevin Johnson’s artwork is unique and powerful, and his technical prowess shines through not only in his paintings but in his exquisitely detailed pencil drawings. I am grateful to the internet for this serendipitous introduction to his work. He is truly an artist to watch and support.
